Living in the Present: A Reiki Practitioner’s Guide to Mindful Awareness

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind, haven’t they? Between all the public holidays, an incredible Angelic Reiki Course that reignited my passion for energy work, and the endless cycle of housework (seriously, where does all this dust come from?), life has felt like a vibrant, chaotic dance. But within the busy-ness, I’ve found moments of clarity that have reminded me why I do what I do – and why staying present is the key to a grounded, soulful life.

Last week, I was sitting at a cosy restaurant, sipping a warm cup of coffee and soaking in the change of scenery. Working from home can blur the lines between routine and inspiration, and sometimes, we need to step out to shake things up. I’m so attuned to the gentle hum of nature – the rustling leaves, the soft breeze, the quiet wisdom of the earth – that I sometimes forget there’s a whole concrete jungle out there, buzzing with its own energy. Watching people go about their day – working, getting frustrated, judging, chatting, laughing – is like a meditation in itself. It’s a reminder that life is messy, beautiful, and interconnected. It puts everything into perspective.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get swept up in the chaos. We’re constantly planning for tomorrow, replaying yesterday, or scrolling through our phones, missing what’s right in front of us. But as someone who works with energy, I know that the present moment is where the magic happens. It’s where we connect with our intuition, our higher selves, and the universal flow of love and healing.

Living in the present doesn’t mean ignoring your responsibilities or floating through life in a blissful daze. It’s about grounding yourself in the here and now, noticing the small details, and finding peace in the ordinary. It’s spiritual, yes, but it’s also deeply practical. When we’re present, we make better decisions, we feel more connected, and we open ourselves up to the subtle messages the universe is always sending.

If you’re feeling disconnected or overwhelmed, here are a few down-to-earth practices to help you anchor yourself in the present moment. These are simple, accessible, and rooted in both spiritual wisdom and everyday life:

 1. Pause and Breathe

Take a moment to stop whatever you’re doing and take three deep breaths. Inhale through your nose, feeling your belly expand, and exhale slowly through your mouth. As you breathe, notice the air moving through your body, the rise and fall of your chest, the sensation of your feet on the ground. This mini-reset can bring you back to the present in seconds. Try it when you’re stuck in traffic, waiting in line, or feeling stressed.

 2. Engage Your Senses

One of the fastest ways to ground yourself is to tune into your five senses. Right now, ask yourself: What do I see? Hear? Smell? Taste? Feel? Maybe it’s the warmth of your coffee mug, the chatter of a nearby conversation, or the scent of fresh flowers. Engaging your senses pulls you out of your head and into the moment. I love doing this when I’m out in nature – feeling the texture of a tree’s bark or listening to the rhythm of the wind always feels like a little gift from the earth.

3. Practice Gratitude on the Go

Gratitude doesn’t have to be a formal journaling session (though that’s great too!). Throughout your day, pause to notice one thing you’re grateful for. It could be the smile of a stranger, the taste of your lunch, or the fact that you made it through a tough morning. When we focus on what’s good, we train our minds to stay present and open to life’s blessings.

4. Create Mindful Transitions

Life is full of transitions – leaving the house, starting a new task, or winding down at night. Use these moments to check in with yourself. Before you walk out the door, take a second to set an intention for your day. When you sit down to work, light a candle or hold a crystal to signal a shift in energy. These small rituals create space for mindfulness and help you stay connected to your inner self.

 5. Observe Without Judgment

As I sit here watching the world go by, I’m reminded of how often we judge – ourselves, others, situations. But judgment pulls us out of the present and into a spiral of overthinking. Try observing your surroundings like a curious child, without labeling things as “good” or “bad.” Notice the way someone’s laughter lights up their face or how the sunlight dances on the pavement. This practice not only keeps you present but also deepens your compassion and connection to others.

 6. Connect with Energy

For those of us who practice Reiki or other forms of energy work, the present moment is our playground. Take a minute to feel the energy flowing through your hands, your heart, or your entire body. You don’t need a formal session – just place your hands on your heart, close your eyes, and let the energy move. This is a powerful way to anchor yourself in the now and tap into the universal love that’s always available.

Finding Balance in the Everyday

Being present isn’t about escaping the messiness of life; it’s about embracing it. It’s about finding the sacred in the mundane – whether you’re washing dishes, sitting in a meeting, or sipping coffee at a café. As a Reiki practitioner, I’ve learned that the energy of the present moment is always there, waiting for us to tune in. It’s in the laughter, the frustrations, the quiet pauses, and the hustle of the world around us.

So, my invitation to you is this: slow down, just for a moment. Look around. Breathe. Notice. Let yourself be fully here, in this wild, beautiful, imperfect life. And if you’re feeling called to deepen your connection to energy and presence, consider joining one of my upcoming Reiki workshops or booking a session. Together, we can explore the magic of living in the now.
