I recently received a call from a potential client who asked me the question many people want to know, “Does Reiki really work?” It was perfect timing, as I had just experienced a severe back spasm while cleaning and re-arranging the top of my cupboards. The evening of the injury, I could barely move without incredible pain. That night, I couldn’t get comfortable. Unable to sleep soundly, each time I woke up, I practiced self-Reiki. For two days, I continued with my daily self-Reiki practice and meditation.
Then, on the third morning, I woke up and, unbelievably, no more pain. I don’t mean the pain was bearable or less; I mean zero pain. No problem sitting up or down, walking, or bending over. It had simply disappeared. The day before, I had thought of calling the doctor, as I had never experienced anything so painful and exhausting. Even though I’ve been practicing Reiki since 2002 and have seen so many clients helped in remarkable ways, even I was surprised to have the pain lifted so quickly and effectively.
While Reiki is most often associated with hands-on healing for others, the main focus of the practice is self-care. This makes perfect sense, since if we don’t take care of ourselves, it is difficult to hold a space of loving compassion for others. As a wise philosopher once said, “You cannot light another’s path without tending to your own inner flame.”
The system of Reiki provides the perfect tools for a daily self-care program, including hands-on healing for the self, meditations, mantras, symbols, and contemplating the Reiki Precepts. This work allows our minds to be freed up to create space for our bodies to heal. When we are balanced in body, mind, and spirit, we are better able to let go of the grip of physical and emotional pain, anxiety, worry, stress, fear, resentment, anger, and a host of emotions that we often carry around for a lifetime.
Reiki is an incredible gift for others as well. I’ve seen people come into a Reiki session anxious, in pain, or completely overwhelmed—and leave feeling calm, light, and held. I’ve seen tears released that had been stuck for years. I’ve seen lifelong insomnia dissolve, chronic tension melt away, and emotional walls soften.
Clients would describe experiences such as “a sense of relaxation and peace,” “no pain or disturbance was entering my body,” “a gentle shower of love,” “feeling strong and in control,” and “providing a getaway from the stress of life.”
So, does Reiki work? It sure does. The profound impact it has on both physical and emotional well-being is undeniable. Whether it’s alleviating intense pain, fostering deep relaxation, or providing a sense of peace and control, Reiki’s benefits are felt by many.
Research and other evidence further support Reiki’s effectiveness. Studies, such as those published in peer-reviewed journals like the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, have shown that Reiki can reduce stress, anxiety, and pain perception in participants, often leading to measurable improvements in heart rate variability and immune function. Hospitals and clinics, including some cancer treatment centres, have integrated Reiki into complementary care programs, realising its ability to enhance patient comfort and emotional well-being. The placebo effect alone cannot fully explain the consistent reports of relief across diverse populations, suggesting that Reiki’s focus on energy balance and relaxation taps into the body’s innate healing mechanisms. Combined with so many personal testimonies, like my own experience with the back spasm, these findings emphasise why Reiki continues to gain recognition as a valuable tool for holistic healing.
