From Chaos to Calm: Staying Positive in a Chaotic World

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably felt the weight of the world pressing down lately. Between endless bad news, social media drama, fuel and price hikes, and just the general hustle of daily life, it’s no wonder most of us are feeling overwhelmed. That constant stream of negativity can sneak up on you, leaving you feeling heavy, irritable, and tossing and turning at night. I’ve seen first-hand how this chaos affects my Reiki students and clients, and honestly, it hits me too. But here’s the thing: we don’t have to let it drag us under. Today, I want to cut through all that nonsense and share some real, practical ways to stay positive and calm, even when everything around us feels a little insane!.

Let’s start by acknowledging reality. The world right now? It’s a crazy whirlwind. Global events, personal stresses, and that never-ending scroll on our phones can make it seem like positivity is a rare commodity. I’ve had days where I wake up feeling great, only to check my social media and suddenly feel that knot in my stomach. It messes with our energy, disrupts our sleep, and can even make simple joys feel out of reach. And if you’re sensitive to vibes like many of us in the Reiki community are, it hits even harder. But recognising this is the first step. It’s okay to feel it; we’re human, after all. The key is not ignoring the storm but learning to navigate it without getting soaked.

So, how do we do that? Here are some down-to-earth ideas that have helped me and many others. These aren’t fluffy ideas; they’re tools you can use right now to reclaim your calm.

  1. Ground Yourself

First, ground yourself with a daily ritual. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start your morning with a quick Reiki self-treatment or even just a few deep breaths while visualising a protective light around you. Picture it pushing away the negativity like a gentle shield. I’ve found that spending just five minutes doing this sets a positive tone for the day. You can also try journaling three things you’re grateful for. It’s simple, but it shifts your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right in your world.

  1. Check Your Environment

Next, assess your environment mindfully. Think about what you’re letting in. Social media can be a double-edged sword, so set boundaries. Maybe limit your time on apps or unfollow accounts that stir up irritation. Instead, follow uplifting voices, like those sharing wellness tips or funny animal videos. At home, create a peaceful corner with crystals, plants, or whatever makes you feel centred. I have a little altar in my office with a Reiki symbol, a sound bowl, crystals and a candle; lighting it reminds me to pause and breathe amid the busyness.

  1. Move

Movement is another game-changer. When negativity builds up, it often gets stuck in our bodies. A walk in nature, yoga, or even dancing to your favourite playlist can release that tension. I’ve noticed that after a short walk, especially on the beach, my mind clears, and sleep comes easier at night. It’s like shaking off the heaviness physically helps lighten the emotional load too.

  1. Connect

Don’t forget the power of connection. In tough times, isolating ourselves can make things worse. Reach out to a friend for a chat, join a community group, or sign up for a course or workshop that interests you. Sharing experiences reminds us we’re not alone. One of our students recently told me how attending a class helped her feel supported and re-energised. Human connection is really a balm for the soul.

  1. Self-Compassion

Finally, practice self-compassion. Some days, the storm might win a round, and that’s fine. Be kind to yourself. If you’re feeling irritated or heavy, acknowledge it without judgment, then gently guide yourself back to calm. Maybe with a warm cup of tea and a good book, or a guided meditation. Over time, these habits build resilience.

Remember, cutting through the nonsense isn’t about pretending everything’s perfect; it’s about choosing calm in the chaos.

You’ve got this. Let’s weather the storm together.
