If you’ve spent any time in the healing world lately, you’ve probably noticed that Reiki isn’t just one thing anymore. You’ll see ads for Usui Reiki, Usui Shiki Ryoho, Karuna, Holy Fire, Angelic, and Jikiden. Each one claims a unique space in the healing arts.
If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the “alphabet soup” of lineages, you aren’t alone. It is a common question: with so many branches, what are the actual differences, and is there such a thing as “true” Reiki?
What is Reiki?
In short, Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. It is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us. While there are many styles, “true” Reiki is defined by a lineage tracing back to its founder, Mikao Usui, and the sacred process of attunements.
The Roots: Understanding the Family Tree
Think of Reiki like a massive, ancient tree. The trunk is the original system developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1920s. Every other style practiced today is a branch that has grown from that same trunk. These branches are shaped by the culture and the teacher who carried the practice forward.
-
Traditional Japanese Reiki (The Trunk)
Styles like Usui Reiki Ryoho and Jikiden Reiki stay as close to the original Japanese teachings as possible. In these traditions, the focus is often on spiritual development and the Gokai (the Five Reiki Principles). Healing others is seen as a natural byproduct of your own inner work. These practices often use intuitive hand placements rather than fixed positions.
-
Western Reiki (The First Major Branch)
In the late 1930s, Hawayo Takata brought Reiki from Japan to Hawaii. To make it accessible to a Western audience, she simplified many of the complex Japanese spiritual practices and introduced structured hand positions. This became Usui Shiki Ryoho, which is the foundation for the majority of Reiki practiced in the world today. It often incorporates the Chakra system. While this was not part of the original Japanese practice, it has become a beloved staple in the West for balancing energy.
-
Specialised & Modern Lineages
As Reiki moved through different Masters and cultures, new branches appeared to meet different energetic needs:
- Gendai Reiki Ho: A beautiful hybrid created in Japan that blends traditional Japanese techniques with Western practices. It is a highly practical system for modern life that keeps the “soul” of the original Japanese teachings intact.
- Seichem: This lineage expands upon Traditional Usui Reiki. It is often described as a higher-vibration, “living light” energy, historically associated with ancient Egypt. It focuses on heart-centred, multidimensional healing, addressing emotional, physical, and spiritual issues.
- Karuna Reiki: Focused deeply on “compassionate action” and emotional or karmic healing.
- Angelic Reiki: This style blends the Reiki symbols with the high-vibration energy of the Angelic Kingdom, acting as a bridge for celestial healing.
- Holy Fire Reiki: A modern evolution that focuses on a high-vibrational, refined energy. It often uses “placements” instead of traditional attunements.
What is “True” Reiki?
This is where the debate usually heats up. If you speak to a purist, they might argue that “true” Reiki is only the original, unmodified Japanese practice. However, most practitioners today view it differently.
A modality is generally considered part of the “Reiki” family if it meets three core criteria:
- Lineage: The teacher can trace their training back to Mikao Usui through a clear line of succession.
- Attunement: The ability to channel the energy is passed from teacher to student through a specific energetic process. This is sometimes called a blessing or Reiju.
- Non-Manipulation: The energy is guided by a higher intelligence, not the practitioner’s ego or willpower.
Whether you are practicing the most traditional Japanese form or a modern elemental variation, the source remains the same: Universal Life Force Energy.
Which One is Right for You?
The “best” type of Reiki is simply the one that resonates with your heart right now.
- If you love tradition, history, and discipline, you might find your home in Usui Reiki or Traditional Japanese styles.
- If you are drawn to structure and the Chakra system, Western Usui Reiki is a fantastic foundation.
- If you feel a pull toward specific emotional themes, celestial connections, or elemental energies, then Karuna, Seichem, or Angelic Reiki might be your path.
At the end of the day, the labels matter way less than the intention. Reiki is a practice of peace, presence, and compassion. No matter which branch you sit on, you are still part of the same beautiful tree.
